Bar association polls in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh on April 5

CHANDIGARH: The elections for the office bearers of all the district bar associations of the states of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh would be held on April 5. A schedule regarding the election was released on Tuesday by the state bar council of Punjab and Haryana.
There are 152 bar associations in both the states and the UT Chandigarh, which would go for the polls on April 5. It includes the Punjab and Haryana high court bar association.
As per the schedule, all the district bar associations have been asked to collect subscription fee and undertaking from its members before January 15. Every lawyer will have to give undertaking and assure that he or she is not associated with other bar association. Person who will not pay the subscription fee would not be eligible for voting. The final list of voters will have to be sent to the bar council by January 31.
The election committees including the returning officers have to be constituted/nominated by February 28. Experience of 10 years of active practice is mandatory for those interested to contest the election for the post of president of a district bar association. To contest the election for the post of vice president and secretary, the candidate should have experience of active practice for five years and for other posts, three years’ experience is mandatory.
Chairman of the state bar council of Punjab and Haryana, V S Ahlawat said that the election of all 152 bar associations have to follow principle of “one vote one bar”. He added that the election in all the bar associations would be conducted on the same day to avoid double voting.
The state bar council is the apex body of lawyers in the state of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh. It is also the regulating and licencing authority of lawyers in the region.
