The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has finally decided to shift focus to the most important part of the city's infrastructure, i.e., sewerage pipeline system. The civic body is slated to spend an average of Rs 6 crore each for a total 12 zones in the city. The total cost therefore will go up to Rs 65.41 crore. The work on upgrading the system will start as soon as the proposal is approved by the corporator.
The city's network of sewerage pipelines are not being able to take the load of the increasing population and many of them are bursting when infrastructure work is being carried out nearby. "Many government authorities, including the BMC, dug up roads to provide basic infrastructure. These ended up damaging the pipelines; some even collapsed. People are worried of the consequences of sewage flowing onto the city roads, especially vis-a-vis health," said a BMC official. The civic body divided the city into 12 zones for the upgradation work.
As per information obtained from the proposal, the work will include repairing damages in pipelines, repairing damaged manholes, change the direction of sewerage lines, separate sewerage line from stormwater drainage which carries rainwater, to join septic tank with main sewerage line, to install new lines and to level manholes buried under the road.
The work will start in all parts of the city except in the area between Bandra to Santacruz.
