Cameron Mark Bergin, 25, was sentenced to six months in court on Tuesday for the incident

A Bunnings customer has been sentenced for wielding an axe at an employee after he was caught trying to steal the tool from a store.

Cameron Mark Bergin was at the Maroochydore store on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland on the morning of May 27 last year when the employee confronted him.

The employee repeatedly asked him to hand over an item concealed under his jumper before Bergin revealed it to be an axe and held it towards the employee with an 'aggressive look on his face,' the court heard.

The 25-year-old then got into a blue Holden Commodore with a co-accused person and fled the scene, according to the Sunshine Coast Daily.

While doing patrols the next day, police found Bergin at an Officeworks next door to the same Bunnings and he fled through backyards before officers found him charging his phone at a nearby IGA supermarket and arrested him.

He has been in custody since then and appeared in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to contravene a police direction, going armed as to cause fear, obstruct police and two counts of stealing.

The second case of stealing was due to being caught the day before stealing multiple items of clothing from a Myer store on the Sunshine Coast by hiding the items under his clothing.

His defence lawyer said that Bergin had a disadvantaged upbringing and the magistrate ordered a six-month sentence with immediate eligibility for parole, to be decided by the parole board.
