Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Monday asked Congress Legislature Party leader to give suggestions to the government on rectifying the errors in a chemical plant in his constituency and not seek its closure.
In his speech on the debate on Governor’s address, Congress Legislature Party leader K.R. Ramasamy said the TCP Limited plant in Karaikudi was a polluter and the locals had been suffering health issues and there was public unrest. He cautioned that it could become another issue like Sterlite.
Intervening, Khadi Minister G. Baskaran said the Collector and other officials held talks with the locals and the plant had zero liquid discharge (ZLD) and there was no need for any apprehensions. Environment Minister K.C. Karuppannan also said the plant had put up a ZLD system in 2015 itself.
Asking the government not to ignore the public sentiments, Mr. Ramasamy said farmers were not asking for desilting of the pond but wanted a factory closed.
Intervening, the Chief Minister said the plant was functioning for a long time.
