MADURAI: A fisherman from Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu, who was fishing in the deep sea with 11 others, died of fever. The deceased has been identified as Benitro, 35, of Vallavilai near Thoothoor in Kanyakumari district.
Fellow fishermen in the village said 12 fishermen, including Benitro, set sail from Neendakarai in Kerala on January 4 for deep sea fishing.
Their boat was about 135 nautical miles off the coast on January 6 (Sunday) when he was down with high fever. Fishermen said Benitro could not bear the extreme cold conditions in the sea.
The fishermeny could not get help from passing ships and other government rescue agencies. The fishermen decided to cut short the fishing expedition and started returning to the shore in a bid to hospitalise him.
Vallavilai village committee secretary Sunil said the boat was around 50 nautical miles off Neendakarai on Monday morning when Benitro breathed his last. The boat then came to Vallavilai with the body on Tuesday afternoon.
The marine police and the villagers received the body and sent it for postmortem. The fisherman is survived by a wife and two children.
Fishermen reiterated their long-pending demand for an air ambulance to airlift ailing fishermen.
