BMW’s Designworks And The North Face Dream Up A Super Light Camper

BMW’s subsidiary Designworks, together with The North Face, has unveiled a new camper concept and virtual reality experience at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The camper concept is said to be lightweight, featuring a new fabric innovation from The North Face, dubbed Futurelight – it uses Nanospinning technology to create what is said to be the world’s most advanced, breathable, waterproof material.

“We combined both physical and digital worlds to showcase this material, ensuring the holistic vision of the brand was clearly communicated, while giving people a real ‘hands-on’ experience,” stated Designworks LA Studio exec, Laura Robin. “Thinking about extreme performance in new and unexpected ways from our experience of working across multiple industries, helped us to provide consumers with a unique and never before seen insight into the very heart of the material and its key attributes.”

Inspiration for the Futurelight camper’s design actually came from the 2008 BMW GINA Light Visionary Model, which like the camper, featured a fabric outer shell, comprised of a flexible material. Meanwhile, the revolutionary Nanospinning process has, for the first time, allowed designers to add air permeability into the membrane of this fabric.

This process creates nano-sized holes, which allow for greater porosity while still remaining waterproof.

CES visitors can check out the Futurelight Camper by invite-only, between January 7th and January 11th. As for the technology itself, it will become available to consumers in The North Face Fall 2019 product line, featured across the brand’s top performance collections.
