CHENNAI: The spectre of a 20-year-old case of rioting and damage to government assets returned on Monday to knock a Tamil Nadu minister out of the Edappadi K Palaniswami cabinet.

Sports and youth development minister P Balakrishna Reddy, who was a BJP office-bearer when he committed the offence in 1998, was found guilty by a special court for sitting and former MLAs/MPs in Chennai and sentenced to three years in jail. Reddy, who represents Hosur constituency in the state assembly, suffered instant disqualification both as minister and MLA. By evening, after several rounds of consultations, the minister's resignation was forwarded to Raj Bhavan. Chief minister Palaniswami chaired a lengthy meeting with his cabinet colleagues and officials before the resignation happened.

On a memo moved by Reddy later in the evening on Monday, trial judge J Shanthi suspended the sentence, enabling him to file an appeal in the HC.
