Tamil Nadu govt announces creation of Kallakurichi district

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Tuesday announced that a new district -- with Kallakurichi as its headquarters – will be created by bifurcating Villupuram district. With the creation Kallakurichi district, the number of districts in the state will go up to 33.
The chief minister was making the announcement while replying to the motion of thanks to the governor’s address in the assembly.
“This decision to create a new was made following requests from various sections,” the chief minister said.
The district will be administered by an IAS official as a special officer.
