BJP allies welcome quota decision
TNN | Jan 8, 2019, 05:37 ISTNEW DELHI: BJP allies LJP, JD(U) and RPI (Athawale) welcomed the decision to introduce quota for economically weaker sections of upper castes. LJP said it issued whip to all its MPs to vote for the bill in Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
“We have been making the demand for extending the reservation to economically backward from upper castes. We are with the government decision to provide this reservation over and above the existing quota, which will not be touched” LJP leader Chirag Paswan said. LJP had not issued whip when the triple talaq bill was voted in Lok Sabha, though Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan and others had voted in its favour.
The minister said LJP had been demanding 15% reservation from its inception in November 2000 and the decision exemplified the government’s commitment to ‘sab ka saath, sab ka vikaas’.
Terming the move a master stroke, Union minister Ramdas Athawale said it could end the difference between the upper and lower castes. “The issue of reservation caused a lot of conflict between Dalits and savarnas,” he said.
JD(U) general secretary K C Tyagi said the decision is in line with Nitish Kumar government’s move of “Agda Ayog” taken in 2011 to identify the poor among the upper castes.
