The action initiated by Mormugao Municipal Council against the fruit and vegetable vendors in Vasco on Monday was for not adhering to the directives issued by the superintendent of police traffic cell Dinraj Govekar.

The superintendent of police traffic cell Govekar had written to the director of municipal administration to direct the municipal authorities in the state to evict and remove roadside vendors including kiosks and hawkers in order to prevent accidents in the interest of ensuring safety of motorists/pedestrians and with an aim to prevent loss of life and property of hawkers/vendors.

Govekar also requested the DMA to direct the municipal authorities to act immediately, ensuing safety of the kiosks/hawkers/vendors operating along the road side, on priority.

Govekar recalled the tragic accident reported on November 11, 2018 at Kone Priol in Ponda, wherein a 38-year-old woman and a 3-year-old child was crushed under the wheels of a heavy crane. The victims were near a roadside kiosk.

“There are several kiosks selling tender coconuts, vegetables, fruits, oil, sugarcane juice etc have mushroomed at various locations along the road side. Hawkers/vendors are also seen squatting along the road shoulders conducting business. Motorists generally stop in front of these kiosks/hawkers by parking their vehicles and most of them prefer buying by sitting in the vehicle and blocking a part of the road which results in congestion and slowing down the movement of vehicular traffic. The sudden stoppage of vehicle in front of such kiosks/hawkers/vendors also results in accidents” said Govekar.
