Surat: District collector Dr Dhaval Patel presided over a meeting on Uttarayan in the city on Monday and it was attended by officers from city police, rural police, forest department, Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), education department, deputy director of animal husbandry and representatives of more than 10 non-government organizations.

The meeting discussed steps to ensure implementation of the ban on Chinese thread and synthetic threat laced with glass powder during Uttarayan. City police have been asked to take strict action against those caught violating the ban.

They reviewed preparations to handle human and bird casualties at primary health centres, hospitals and veterinary hospitals in the city and district. Ten teams of DGVCL and cable operators were formed to remove threads and kites that dangle from overhead wires.

Puneet Nayyar, deputy conservator of forest, told TOI, “At least 1,300 volunteers with five ambulances will work under Karuna Abhiyan run by the state government for 10 days from January 10. We appeal to people to fly kites without using sharp-edged manja so that no birds and humans are harmed.”
