Vasai BJP youth leader held for assault on cops

MUMBAI: A BJP youth unit president from Vasai and seven others were arrested for allegedly assaulting personnel at Valiv police station early on Tuesday.
A night patrol police team intervened when BJP youth leader Ranjit Singh and a few party workers were assaulting some men near Tungareshwar Phata on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad national highway at Vasai on Monday night. Singh and seven men were taken to the police station, where they allegedly assaulted Sachin Bavdane, who was on duty. The workers created a ruckus and manhandled police personnel, inspector Prakash Birajdar said.
They have been booked under Indian Penal Code sections 353 (obstructing government servant on duty) and 352 (assault). The Vasai court remanded them to judicial custody.
BJP workers took out a morcha to the police station on Tuesday, alleging that police had assaulted the men. Video clips of the ruckus at the police station went viral on Tuesday morning. The workers alleged that they had, in fact, intervened in a fight at Tungareshwar phata.
The men refused to go for medical tests, police said. tnn
