MUMBAI: Two unidentified men, masked and armed, allegedly decamped with a steel box containing around Rs 38 lakh outside the Axis Bank ATM in Nalasopara (east) on Tuesday evening. Preliminary investigation suggests that the men fled in a white Wagon R car driven by another unidentified man.

The robbery took place at around 4.30pm when a van carrying the cash to be refilled at the ATM located at Gavraipada, Santosh Bhuvan, Nalasopara (east) arrived outside the ATM.

The security guard and a staffer alighted from the van with the box containing the cash. The two masked men came from behind and held the guard at gun-point. While one assaulted the guard with an iron rod, the other snatched the box. They fled towards the car and drove away towards the Mumbai-Ahmedabad national highway.

Police said that they will record the statement of the guard to know the sequence of events.

In August 2013, six armed men had stolen two boxes containing Rs 3.5 crore from the Axis Bank, Nalasopara (west) branch. The men, masked and armed, had arrived in an SUV when the cash van was loading money from the bank into the van. No breakthrough has been made in the case so far.
