Nirmala Sitharaman to review HAL work today
TNN | Jan 9, 2019, 04:21 ISTNEW DELHI: Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday will review the performance of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) with its chairman, three Service chiefs and other top officials in the backdrop of the continuing slugfest between the government and the Congress over the stressed finances of the defence PSU.
Sources said HAL CMD R Madhavan was slated to brief the MoD on Wednesday after a board meeting of the PSU, which has taken an overdraft of Rs 962 crore to pay salaries to its employees. As was first reported by TOI, HAL’s largest customer IAF owes it Rs 14,500 crore out of its total pending dues of Rs 15,700 crore.
Sitharaman, on her part, has told Parliament that contracts worth Rs 26,571 crore were inked with HAL from 2014 to 2018, while orders worth another Rs 73,000 crore are in the pipeline. Congress president Rahul Gandhi, in turn, has alleged that HAL was deprived of a lucrative deal in the Rs 59,000 crore contract for 36 Rafale fighters from France to favour the Anil Ambani-promoted Reliance Defence.
