Attingal: When the clock ticks 4.30am, Santha and Rajan will be ready to serve their customers with piping hot tea and lip smacking snacks. It is not just the tasty food, the eatery run by the couple near Kulangara level cross which is 1.5km from Kadakkavoor railway station is known for defying strikes and hartals.
While major business establishments shy away from opening their shops during hartal, this couple is not ready to budge under any threat.
The eatery has been open for customers at every harthal day for the past 25 years. Even on general holidays, a customer can satiate their hunger from the shop which is open till 8.30pm.
“I open the shop on all days. It was never shut even on Thiruonam days. I am doing this business to sustain my family and as a service,” said Santha.
The eatery is also known for its quality food and affordable rates. Items such as idly, dosa and appam are charged only Rs 3 and puttu and curry is available for just Rs 10. “Thanks to Santha, we get quality food at cheaper rates on all days,” said Alphonsya a frequent visitor to the shop.
Local politicians said they also knew about the shop functioning on hartal days. But, they didn’t try to close the shop as often the shop supplies essential items on a hartal day to them too.
