Lok Sabha passes Constitution (124 Amendment) Bill, 2019
New Delhi: After a long day of debates, arguments and counter arguments, Lok Sabha passes Constitution (124 Amendment) Bill, 2019 with 323 ‘ayes’. The bill will provide 10 per cent reservation for economically weaker section of the society in higher educational institutions.
The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Fourth Amendment) Bill, 2019 was passed after a division with 323 members voting in its favour and three against.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in the House when the voting took place.
Earlier, the House witnessed a heated debate with Finance Minister Aun Jaitley making a strong pitch in favour of the bill and targeting Congress for raising concerns about the bill it had earlier supported.
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati welcomed the reservation move but with a rider. She said that the decision was an “election stunt and political gimmick” ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, but her party welcomes the “immature” move by the government.
