Five arrested for opening fire on bullock in TN village

VILLUPURAM: A special police team on Tuesday arrested five men, including a national-level shooter, on charges of opening fire on a bullock belonging to villager involved in illegal sand mining in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu on December 30. The police team seized a Brno 7.62mm shooting riffle and bullets from the accused.
A gang came to the Veeramur lake near Kedar in the early hours of December 30 in a sport utility vehicle when some villagers were loading sand to bullock carts. Presuming that revenue officials were in the vehicle, the villagers hid themselves in nearby bushes. The gang opened fire. Though all the villagers escaped unhurt, a bullock belonging to Krishnamoorthy, 43, sustained injuries.
A special of police team headed by Villupuram superintendent of police S Jayakumar arrested the accused from Puducherry on Tuesday. The arrested have been identified as national-level rifle shooter Thangaraj, 38, and four of his relatives -- Arun Pandiyan,24, Arul, 33 , Anbarasan, 28, and Karthick, 26, all natives of Thirukkanur in Puducherry .
“All the five accused were arrested after tracking their mobile phone numbers. A mobile tower registered their phone numbers on the day of the incident,” Jayakumar said.
The accused told the police that they along with some woman members in the family went to their family temple at Devadanam Pettai near Gingee on two vehicles on December 29.
A rifle and bullets seized from the accused
While they were returning to Puducherry in the early hours of December 30, Thangaraj and four others went to Veeramur lake searching for hunting while others continued their journey. They wanted to shoot a wild boar. But Thangaraj had accidently shot a bullock, they told the police.
All the accused have been booked under Section 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle) of the IPC and sections 27 (1) 25(1) of Indian Arms Act.
