  • Dozens were evacuated from a street in Melbourne after a gas pipe was ruptured
  • Metropolitan Fire Brigade were called to the scene at around 7.45am Tuesday
  • The gas leakage has forced closure of several streets in the Oakleigh South area

Dozens of people have been evacuated from an Oakleigh South street over fears of an explosion following a major gas leak. 

Metropolitan Fire Brigade firefighters were called to Valley Street in Melbourne's southeast at around 7.45am after an excavator burst a gas pipe. 

A number of residents and workers in the vicinity were evacuated as firefighters used water to disperse the gas.

The power has since been isolated and MFB crews are using air monitoring equipment to assess air quality. 

The MFB say the incident is under control.  

The gas leak has forced the closure of several streets in the Oakleigh South area, 17km south-east of Melbourne's central business district. 

No injuries have been reported.
