Bharat bandh: Schools and colleges in Mysuru closed today; transport services to be hit

MYSURU: The two-day nationwide strike against the anti-worker policies of the BJP-led Union government is likely to hit normal life on Tuesday and Wednesday.
While commercial establishments and hotels will be open, transport services and postal services are likely to be hit.
Mysuru DC Abhiram G Sankar has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in the district on Tuesday. Whether the holiday will be extended to Wednesday will depend on Tuesday’s situation, he added.
Kuvempu University and Davanagere University postponed their BEd exams scheduled on January 8, while Tumkur University put off its MBA, MCom, MA and VTU postponed all its exams scheduled for January 8 and 9. Details of new dates are available on respective university’s website.
The state government said the decision to remain open or close is left to individual schools and colleges, even as universities postponed various exams scheduled for the two days.
Commissioner, Department of Public Instruction (DPI) PC Jaffer said, “Respective DCs have been asked to take a decision according to local situation in the districts.”
The 48-hour strike could spare travellers as tourist spots mainly Mysuru Zoo and Palace, will be open. City and KSRTC buses are likely to stay off the roads. Banking services will also be affected due to the strike. Police have beefed up security ahead of the strike.
Mysuru Industries Association (MIA) has asked industries to extend compensatory holidays on Tuesday and Wednesday. While it left the decision to the managements, MIA president Vasu and general secretary Suresh Kumar Jain stated that in the larger interest of the fraternity, industries should extend holidays.
Postal employees union has extended its support for the strike and its services will be affected for two days. Union leader Sundaraiah said they will take out a rally on Tuesday from the General Post Office on Ashoka Road. He said there are 65 post offices in Mysuru division, including 38 in the city in which 15,000 workers are operating.
Kuvempu University in Shivamogga has postponed exams scheduled for January 8 and 9 owing to the agitation. The exams will be held on January 20 and 21.
At Hassan, MC Dongre, district president, AITUC, stated that the labour union will lead the strike. GT Rangegowda, district secretary, KSRTC Staff and Workers Federation, said that they supporting the strike as their jobs are at stake.
