AMC fines BRTS for fatal accidents

AHMEDABAD: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has slapped a fine of Rs five lakh each for two fatal accidents, one in Shastrinagar and another one in Bopal on BRTS contractor. According to officials, the municipal commissioner in order to set example, has asked to impose fine on the contractor for rash driving.
On Sunday night a 32-year-old man was killed, and three persons of the same family suffered critical injuries when a BRTS vehicle hit the man’s two-wheeler and then a car in which a family was travelling, near Pallav Crossroad in Shastrinagar area.
Meanwhile on Tuesday, a 20-year-old motorcyclist was mowed down by a BRT bus near the Umiya Mata temple crossroad in Bopal.
Officials said that after the incident the authorities immediately slapped a fine of Rs five lakh each for both the accidents. An official of the AMC said the Monday accident was the second fatal accident and the fourth since April 2018. In the past two years, around 14 people have lost their lives in BRTS accident.
The officer said that the driver, even in the mixed lane, resorted to rash driving resulting in the incident. The officials said that majority of the accidents are in the mixed lane where the BRTS vehicles move with the other traffic or at the crossroads. The officials said the drivers refuse to slow down their vehicle even when they approach a cross road.
