NEW DELHI: Delhi government has asked Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) to carry out a study to find out how app-based cabs affect the city’s traffic.

The move comes after a direction from a Parliamentary committee last month, which had also suggested capping the number of vehicles registered in Delhi to tackle traffic congestion. The suggestion, however, is not going to be implemented any time soon by Delhi government.

“At the moment, the public transport in Delhi is not robust enough for us to put a cap on the number of new vehicles being registered. We are working on bringing 3,000 new buses and the first batch would start rolling out from this year. We can work on the modalities of capping vehicle registrations, but it is not possible to implement such a measure this year,” said a Delhi government official on the condition of anonymity.

The Centre had also written to chief secretary Vijay Dev to convene a meeting on these issues. On Tuesday, different stakeholders, such as senior officials of Delhi Traffic Police and the state transport department, participated in a meeting chaired by the chief secretary.

Despite repeated attempts, Dev couldn’t be contacted for comments. However, sources said that while the study to find out the effect of app-based cabs on traffic congestion was approved, the suggestion of capping the number of vehicles registered in Delhi was not found feasible.

Delhi has more than one crore vehicles and nearly 2,000 new ones are registered in the city every day. “Putting a cap on the number of new vehicles is a radical move, which has to be supported by a robust public transport system and adequate last mile connectivity. Without first providing adequate public transport options, including metro and buses, we can’t stop people from buying personal vehicles,” the official said.
