The scene of a ground floor apartment fire on Fawkner Street in Braddon on Monday night has been handed over to police, the Emergency Services Agency says.

The fire destroyed the unit in the Fullerton apartment complex at 11 Fawkner Street and forced the evacuation of about 40 residents.

Firefighters extinguished the fire and searched the premises after being called just before midnight.

Paramedics assessed and treated seven people for minor smoke inhalation, but no one was taken to hospital.
