Offensive coordinator-quarterbacks coach Josh McDaniels says “The book is closed” and he'll remain in New England “moving forward."
FOXBORO – No need to cue up any travelin’ music for Josh McDaniels.
The Patriots offensive coordinator-quarterbacks coach says he isn't going anywhere.
After interviewing for the Green Bay Packers’ head coaching job – one that team is filling with the hiring of Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur – McDaniels says he’s staying put in New England.
“The book is closed,” McDaniels said during a conference call on Tuesday. “It’s always a humbling experience to have an opportunity to interview with anybody for that position and I’m thankful for the opportunity to meet with Green Bay. It’s always gives you greater insight into another organization and how they do things. It’s been very educational for me every time I’ve gone through it and I’ve appreciated every single one of them.
“That was great, but, no, I’m completely focused on the Chargers and our season and finishing it strong,” said McDaniels, “and I’ll be here moving forward.”
Tuesday being the players’ normal weekly day off, McDaniels continued to work on a game plan for Sunday afternoon’s AFC divisional round playoff game with the Los Angeles Chargers at Gillette Stadium, one the team was to begin to implement on the practice field Wednesday.
According to McDaniels, his work this week won’t be an easy task.
“The Chargers’ defense in general,” said McDaniels, “is the best group we’ve played all year.”
After working as a graduate assistant at Michigan State, McDaniels broke into the NFL as a personnel assistant/coaches assistant on Bill Belichick’s staff in 2001, working his way up to become the Patriots’ quarterbacks coach in 2004 and taking on the dual role of offensive coordinator-QBs coach in 2006.
Hired as Denver’s head coach in 2009, McDaniels guided the Broncos to an 8-8 finish in his first year and was mired at 3-9 in his second season when the ax fell and he was fired in 2010.
After working as the St. Louis Rams’ offensive coordinator-QBs coach in 2011, McDaniels returned to New England in that dual role in 2012 and has held those roles here ever since.
Along the way, of course, there was the bizarre scenario last February when McDaniels was in position to take over head coaching duties in Indianapolis only to back out at the last moment, leaving the Colts at the altar to remain with the Patriots.
One year later, while Patriots linebackers coach and de facto defensive coordinator Brian Flores has been very much in demand, reportedly interviewing for the head coaching openings in Cleveland, Denver, Green Bay and Miami, the Packers were the only team to speak with McDaniels, although he reportedly turned down an offer to meet with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Asked if he thought what transpired a year ago made teams leery of contacting him about their openings this year, McDaniels said: “I have no idea.”
