After several months of wait, the new police station at Pantheerankavu is ready for opening.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will open the station building through videoconferencing on February 10. The station will have 36 personnel, including a Circle Inspector and two Sub Inspectors.
With the opening of the station, there will be 19 police stations in the city. Olavanna, Kunnathupalam, Mathara, Manakkadavu and Arappuzha regions under the current Nallalam station will now come under the new station.
The Pantheerankavu station was one of the six new police stations announced by the State government in its last Budget with a total allocation of around ₹50 crore for the modernisation of the police force under various national schemes and for opening new stations.
Police sources said the request to bifurcate the Elathur and Nallalam police stations was under the active consideration of the government as both the stations had bigger jurisdiction.
The police said efforts would be made to construct a permanent building for the Pantheerankavu police station after identifying an appropriate plot in Olavanna. Till then, the station will function from the building provided by the local panchayat after a ₹10-lakh renovation work, they added.
