A home has been completely destroyed by a blaze that was started by a child playing with a lighter.

Diana Bhandari fled her Adelaide home with her two boys, aged five and one, as flames ripped through the property on Monday.

Ms Bhandari had left her eldest son on the back patio of their O'Sullivan Beach property while she put her toddler to sleep.

She was unaware a lighter had been left on the patio as well.

Moments later, 'bright orange flames' leapt from the home.

Ms Bhandari managed to escape with both her boys. A neighbour had to break down the garage to save the family dog, who was trapped inside.

Fire crews were called to the property and spent 15 minutes extinguishing the blaze.

The house was completely gutted and all of their possessions were destroyed.

Friend Simone Greer told Adelaide Now the family's lives have been turned 'completely upside down'.

'She lost everything in the fire, one of the firefighters managed to recover her hard drive and her kids' handprints.

'Diana's message is; please do not leave a lighter or anything where children can reach, a fire could happen in an instant.'

She has begun fundraising for the family, and hopes to raise $10,000 through a GoFundMe page.

Tips for parents/carers to help prevent unsafe fire play and experimentation:

  • Keep all matches and lighters out of reach and sight of children
  • Teach older children how to use matches and lighters safely and responsibly
  • Teach your children about fire safety
  • Install smoke alarms in your children's bedroom
