One died and a family of four was injured on Sunday night around 11.30 pm by a speeding BRTS bus that rammed into an Activa and a car at the Pallav crossroad near Shastrinagar. The bus driver fled while the Activa rider died on the spot and four people, including two children in the car sustained injuries; the family was rushed to a nearest private hospital.

According to the police, the bus was moving beyond the permissible limit. CCTV footage recovered from the spot shows that the bus driver did not apply breaks nor did he reduce the speed before crossing the junction. The police were able to arrest the accused identified as Chiranji Lal, 37, a resident of Zundal BRTS station.

PSI, B division of the traffic police, Amit Chhowala said, "The Activa driver came under the bus as it hit him. Then it went on to ram the car and dragged it till more than ten feet until it was finally stopped by the BRTS median. People who witnessed the incident rushed to the spot to help the victims."

The Activa driver has been identified as 32-year-old Shambu Pawar, a resident of Gota. Pawar ran a cafe in Shastrinagar. The injured — including two children — have been identified as Nilesh Darji, Rita Darji (Nilesh's Wife), Tina (13) and Ishan (8), who were rushed to a private hospital for treatment.

The Ghatlodia police and B division police controlled the situation at the spot and disperse the traffic. A complaint was lodged against the BRTS bus driver by the B division police station under IPC 379, 234, 338, 304 (A).

KD Nakul, Inspector of B division, said, "During interrogation, the accused said he saw the vehicles crossing the road, but when he tried to apply the brakes they didn't work and he lost control over the bus. We will examine the vehicle with the help of RTO and FSL to ascertain if the brakes of the bus were failed or not."
