MUMBAI: In a broad daylight robbery, two masked and armed men allegedly decamped after assaulting an armed escort and looting a bag containing around Rs 38 lakh. The incident took place outside the Axis Bank ATM in Nalasopara (E) on Tuesday.
The men fled in a white Wagon R driven by another unidentified man. The car did not have a number plate and had the name of a car aggregator on it. Closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage has captured the car heading toward the Mumbai-Ahmedabad national highway.
The robbery took place around 4.45pm when a van belonging to OM Logistics arrived with the cash to be refilled at the ATM located at Gavraipada, Santosh Bhuvan.
Gunman Birju Paswan and a custodian alighted from the van with the cash box. The two men came from behind and assaulted Paswan with an iron rod. Paswan sustained a head injury and collapsed. The men held the custodian at gunpoint, snatched the bag from him and fled in the car, said additional superintendent of police Vijaykant Sagar.
A massive nakabandi was imposed and toll nakas on the Mumbai and Ahmedabad roads put on high alert. Police sources said the modus operandi in such cases is to move the cash from one vehicle to another. The possibility of the car being abandoned is not ruled out. Police suspect the car may have been a stolen one. They have not ruled out the involvement of an insider either. Two teams have been formed to investigate the case.
In August 2013, six armed men had stolen two boxes containing Rs 3.5 crore from the Axis Bank, Nalasopara (W) branch. No breakthrough has been made in the case yet.
