1. How to make garam masala at home

Garam masala is an important spice of Indian cuisine that is used in a number of dishes to increase the flavour and aroma of food. Traditionally there used to be 32 spices in garam masala. It is known to have therapeutic properties and is a mix of spices like peppers, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, fennel seeds, bay leaf, nutmeg and star anise. Home-made garam masala is preferred more than store-bought garam masala. Here is the simple and easy recipe to make garam masala at home.

2. Ingredients

Peppercorns- 2 tablespoons

Green cardamom- 2 tablespoons

Star anise- 3 to 4

Black cardamom-2 tbsp

Bay leaves- 2

Coriander seeds- 1/4 cup

Cloves- 2 tablespoons

Fennel seeds- 1 tablespoon

Cinnamon stick- 1 inch

Nutmeg- 1/2

Cumin seeds- 2 tbsp

3. Method

Step 1: Dry roast the spices on medium-low heat for 2 minutes until you get an aroma. Keep aside to cool.

Step 2: Once cooled, grind all the toasted spices in a blender until it is a coarse-fine powder.

Step 3: Garam masala is ready for use and store in an airtight container.

4. Improves digestion

Adding garam masala to your food increases your body temperature which consequently boosts your metabolism as well. Furthermore, it prevents the build-up of toxins and boosts digestion. The cumin in the garam masala treats indigestion and cloves keep acidity at bay.

Ingredients used in making garam masala like cloves, pepper, cardamom and cinnamon are known to lower bad cholesterol levels.
