MADURAI: The Madurai city police have booked a building contractor, his family members and a couple of partners for allegedly harassing a woman who approached him to build a house for her.
In her complaint with the Thirupparankundram police, M Poongothai alleged that she had approached the contractor, T Raman, to build a house on an empty plot in Sengundram Nagar at an estimated cost of Rs 25 lakh. She paid Rs 21 lakh as advance, as demanded by the contractor, seven months ago. But she was upset when she found that construction work was not progressing.
Poongothai, who works as a cashier in the State Bank of India, approached Raman asking why the work was progressing slowly. The contractor demanded a few more lakhs of rupees to resume work. Soon a dispute broke out between them. He and his family members allegedly threatened her with dire consequences.
Later, they allegedly barged into her house and scolded her.
The police booked the contractor, his wife, son, mother-in-law, brother and partners Raja and Doss under various sections of the IPC and the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.
