- The government’s decision to introduce a 10% reservation for economically backward classes has received a mixed response from political parties. Several opposition parties have termed the government’s decision politically motivated taken with an eye on upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Vijay Sampla, MoS for social justice and empowerment
It's a historic step by Modi government. It's meant for economically weaker upper caste sections whose annual earning is lower than Rs 8 lakhs and who possess less than five acres of land. It will not affect other reservation categories.
* Abhishek Singhvi, Congress spokesperson
"Why did you not think of this for four years and eight months? So obviously thought of as election gimmick three months before the model code. You know that you cannot exceed 50 per cent maxima so it is done only to posture that you tried."
* Harish Rawat, Congress
Congress on 10% reservation approved by Cabinet for economically weaker upper castes: 'Bohot der kar di meherbaan aate aate', that also when elections are around the corner. No matter what they do, what 'jumlas' (slogans) they give, nothing is going to save this Govt.
* Asaduddin Owaisi
Reservations are meant to correct historical injustice to dalits. For poverty alleviation, one may run various schemes but reservations are meant for justice. The Constitution doesn’t permit reservations on economic grounds.
* Yashwant Sinha
The proposal to give 10% reservation to economically weaker upper castes is nothing more than a jumla. It is bristling with legal complications and there is no time for getting it passed thru both Houses of Parliament. Govt stands completely exposed.
* Omar Abdullah, National Conference
Reservation for economically backward upper castes. The bugle announcing the elections has well and truly sounded.
* Sanjay Singh, AAP
The Modi government in the name of 10% reservation for economically-backward people in general category has given an election slogan. Such decisions have been taken by several states in the past. However, the court has put a restriction on more than 50% reservation. Even this decision is a gimmick to compel the court to put a bar on it. For a 10% reservation constitutional amendment is required. A special session (of Parliament) should be called in by the government. We will support the government. Otherwise, it will merely be reduced to an election slogan.
