The Greater Chennai Corporation D Karthikeyan handed over Rs 1.6 crore to AK Viswanathan, Commissioner of city police for implementing ‘Third Eye’ CCTV camera installation project of the police department, on Saturday.

According to a press release issued by the civic body, the money was the police department’s share in auctioning abandoned vehicles from city roads and it would be used to install CCTV cameras on the roads.
The city police have installed around 2 lakh CCTV cameras in the city and the department is looking forward to install 3 lakh cameras.
“The civic body had earned Rs.2.13 crore from the auction of abandoned vehicles and 75 per cent of it, that is (Rs 1.6 crore) was given to the police department,” an official said.
The civic body, with the help of police, had removed 7,875 vehicles from roads and disposed of them through auction. Meanwhile, the Chennai Corporation has taken steps to auction another lot of 1,241 abandoned vehicles.
The civic body and the police had confiscated old and abandoned vehicles off the roads and uploaded its details on the Corporation’s official website.
