Blood safety

more-in

The case of a pregnant woman in Tamil Nadu testing positive for HIV as a result of a blood transfusion raises many questions on the efficacy of the medical care being offered in the State (Tamil Nadu, “Tainted blood”, January 6). In India, there is much reliance placed on laboratory assistants especially in pathology laboratories operated by private firms. Readings too differ drastically from one clinic to the other even if tests are taken within a span of a few days. There is rampant commercialisation observed, with many such laboratories offering heavily discounted package deals for a series of health/blood tests. How far tests conducted at such throwaway prices are reliable, no one knows. The Medical Council of India should frame proper guidelines so that there is no margin for error.
