Two arrested in Trichy for poaching monitor lizard

TRICHY: Forest officials arrested two people here on Monday for poaching a two-foot-long monitor lizard – a species protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972.
The arrested have been identified as T Murugan, 22, and M Hariharan, 22, both hailing from Srirangam. The duo poached the monitor lizard from near Srirangam on Sunday.
There is considerable monitor lizard population in Trichy area, according to officials.
Monito lizards are hunted for meat. Trichy district forest officer D Sujatha said monitor lizard meat was illegally sold in eateries on the highways in Krishnagiri district.
