A family returning from travels over the holidays to its Georgia home the day after the New Year was shocked to discover the locks had been changed and a stranger in a wheelchair squatting inside.

Homeowner Janice Henson could not get her key to work on the Vintage Club Circle house in Marietta, Georgia, when she encountered a man in a wheelchair claiming he lived there now and had a gun, according to WSB-TV.

Henson contacted the police who say the man, identified as 26-year-old Nathaniel Jacob Nuckols of Canton, Georgia, threatened to shoot them.

After a five-hour standoff with the authorities, a SWAT team broke through the front door and sent in a robot to find Nuckols who surrendered peacefully.

No weapon was found on him or in the house, according to the police.

Henson did not know how long Nuckols was squatting, but found that the food left in the home gone and belongings had been rearranged.
