PUDUKOTTAI: At least 10 Sabarimala pilgrims from Telangana died and five others were injured when a trailer truck rammed their van near Tirumayam in Pudukottai district on Sunday.

Police identified nine of the dead as R Nagaraj, 35, A Mahesh, 28, M Kumar, 22, Sham, 22, S Pravin, 24, Krishna, 35, M Saai, 22, Aanjaneyalu, and Suresh, 25 - all from Methak district of Telangana. The driver of the van, who also died, was yet to be identified. While five of the victims died on the spot, others succumbed to injuries while being taken to the Tirumayam GH, police said.

The injured were K Poomakavud, 28, D Raju, 28, S Venkatesh, 35, N Sailamal and Naresh. Of them, four have been admitted to the Pudukottai Government Medical College Hospital and one at the Tirumayam GH.

Accident due to negligent driving: Cops

The victims, who had visited Rameswaram after their pilgrimage to Sabarimala, were returning when the tragedy struck them at 2.35pm. Police said the trailer driver was driving in a rash and negligent manner, and the van was on high speed at the time of accident.


Police have launched a search for the trailer driver who fled from the scene.


Health minister C Vijayabaskar, collector S Ganesh, DIG Lalithakumari and superintendent of police S Selvaraj inspected the accident site. The Thirumayam police retrieved the bodies and sent them to the Thirumayam GH for postmortem. Further investigations are on.
