The protest held on January 4 at Jantar Mantar was perceived to be one that would gather support for the Union Territory’s long-pending demand for full Statehood.
But the tone of speeches and sloganeering of workers belonging to 21 political parties and outfits gave an impression that the protest was aimed at Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi.
Reports reaching here suggest that speakers, including Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy, his council of Ministers and some of the national leaders, used the occasion to highlight Ms. Bedi’s “undemocratic and autocratic” style of functioning. “More than the demand for Statehood, it was more of a call to the Union Government to recall the Lt. Governor,” said a legislator who was part of the 500-odd contingent which participated in the protest.
Tug of war persists
The current difference of opinion between the Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi and Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy over the distribution of Pongal gift hampers has given rise to apprehensions whether there would be free availability of products for the forthcoming Pongal festival. While Ms. Bedi is defending her decision to restrict the benefits only to Below Poverty Line families on the basis of rules framed by the Civil Supplies Department, Mr. Narayanasamy has taken the stand that all cardholders should be included.
Who will have the last laugh remains to be seen.
