Commissioner of Mangaluru City Corporation Mohammed Nazir said on Sunday that if the city has attracted the country’s attention in cleanliness and solid waste management, its credit should go to the swachhata abhiyan being carried out here for four years under the Ramakrishna Mission.

The corporation received ‘India’s best city in solid waste management’ award under the categories of cities having a population between three lakh and 10 lakh under the Swachh Survekshan 2018. “The corporation has joined hands with the mission in garbage segregation and management from every household,” the Commissioner said.

He was speaking after launching the fifth ‘shramdan’ of the last phase at Padua here on Sunday. The Commissioner also took part in the drive. The volunteers cleaned the Padua areas in the city.

Garbage, plastic papers, old beds, cloth and building debris were lying scattered on both sides of NH66 between Padua and Karnataka Polytechnic.

About 10 tipper loads of garbage were cleared from the area. As more cleaning work is pending in the area it was decided to have one more shramdan in the coming days.
