Emergency crews rush to Indian Ocean Drive crash
A young woman has been seriously injured in a car crash on Indian Ocean Drive near Wedge Island.
A car carrying four people, including a toddler, was involved in a single vehicle rollover around 7.30am Monday morning.
Early police reports suggested one of the occupants of the car was possibly ejected from the vehicle.
An 18-year-old woman has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.
A 17-year-old and 15-year-old male received non-life threatening injuries in the crash.
A one-year-old was not injured.
The incident occurred around 7.30am, near the intersection of Beacon Road in Wedge Island.
The RAC Rescue helicopter and volunteer fire fighters were at the scene.
The highway is closed in both directions between Lancelin and Cervantes.
The crash comes around a month after three people were killed and nine people injured in a head-on collision on the stretch of road on December 9.
The state government recently spent $7 million installing four new passing lanes on the notorious stretch of road between Yanchep and Lancelin to encourage vehicles to overtake safely.
Police Minister Michelle Roberts said the passing lanes included wide centre line treatment to create more space between opposing traffic.
"These passing lanes are part of a broader program of improvements we are making to Indian Ocean Drive," she said on December 22.
"More and more crashes are caused by simple errors of judgement or moments of inattention.
"There will be many people using this road at this time of year and I would ask drivers to be extra careful.
"Always drive to the conditions, don't drive tired or distracted and don't drive with alcohol or drugs in your system."
In 2018, 158 people died on WA roads, with 99 incidents occurring on regional roads.
