The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) will implement a comprehensive drinking water project to distribute potable water to the residents in Chengannur Assembly constituency.
Saji Cherian, MLA, said that the project would be realised at a cost of ₹200 crore.
“The project will bring an end to the drinking water woes of people in different parts of the region,” Mr. Cherian said.
It will cover areas including Chengannur Municipality and Ala, Puliyoor, Budhanoor, Pandanad, Mulakuzha, Venmony and Cheriyanad panchayats.
“It is going to be one of the biggest drinking water projects in the State.
A meeting recently chaired by Water Resources Minister K. Krishnankutty directed the officials concerned to prepare a detailed project report for the implementation of the project.
The project will be funded under the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB),” Mr. Cherian said.
The water for the scheme will be collected from a well in Pampa river at Kolamukku.
“The water will then be brought to a tank with 15 lakh litres capacity at Angadikkal. We will construct a treatment plant with a capacity to treat 35 lakh litres of water on a daily basis at Nikarumpuram near Mulakuzha. Another tank with 14 lakh litres of capacity will be also be set up for the distribution of water,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Alappuzha municipality has launched the work of a project aimed at addressing drinking water issues in the municipal area. The project is being implemented at a cost of ₹149 crore under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).

Officials said that the project would help to provide potable water to residents in 12 divisions living on the banks of Vembanad Lake in the municipality. For implementing the project, pipes need to be laid under the lake.
Officials said that tenders had been awarded and pipe laying work would be completed in nine months.
As part of the project, 4 OHSR water tanks will be set up at Alissery, Pazhaveedu, Thathampally and Kommady.
