MYSURU: In what is, well and truly, a step towards increasing its global outreach, the University of Mysore (UoM) will organise and host visiting professors from universities of international repute. The varsity has fixed an honorarium of USD 5,000 for these professors, who will be chosen from universities that feature on ‘Best Universities’ list such as TIME, Shanghai/ QS Global.
UoM vice-chancellor Prof G Hemantha Kumar said that the rationale behind hosting visiting professors from foreign universities – the first such instance in the varsity’s 100-year-old history – was to expose students to some of the best minds in global academia. “It will be a special experience for the students. They will be able to understand advancements in their respective fields from these teachers,” Prof Kumar told TOI.
On the logistics of the new initiative, he said that the visiting professors would teach one or two units of a subject for the duration of a month. “The professors will be accommodated free of cost at the University Guest House. Besides the $5000 honorarium, we will pay for their airfare (economy class),”
Under the scheme, the visiting professor will have to teach postgraduate students for at least 8 hours, and stay at the varsity for 10 to 15 days. “They will also provide guidance to our faculty members, and help research scholars,” said Kumar.
UoM registrar R Rajanna said that the new initiative would boost the varsity’s prestige, and enhance the academic environment. “This will help us improve our ranking in the NAAC survey. This scheme will be introduced from the current academic year,” Rajanna added.
