This is not looking good at the moment. The rain is getting heavier and players might just take an early lunch today.

With the amount of time we have lost in this match, there is no doubt that India will enforce the follow on if the bowlers can dismiss the Aussies in time. It looks like we are going to lose the entire session here.

05:36(IST)

The rain continues to frustrate the players as well as fans alike. The Indian players will be eager to get on the park and get the remaining Aussie wickets. On the other hand Aussies will be hoping that rain continues for some more time.

False hope. Is there anything worse? Australian cricket fans were given a healthy dollop of it to consume on day three at the SCG.

Without ever being match-winning, Marcus Harris has looked more and more like an opener who could be in the job for a while, writes Adam Collins from the SCG.

RAIIN: Still some time left before we get the play going. It has started to rain now. There will be a further delay for now. Stay tuned for updates.

“Harris is (a lock), I've been really impressed with the way he's played. Khawaja is a lock to go even though he hasn't had a great series so far. On the back of what I saw today I really liked what I got to see from Marnus. His technique looked good,"  "He plays in Brisbane so he handles the swinging ball well which you sort of expect over in England so I'd pick him on the back of what I've seen today. Travis Head, our second leading run-scorer in this series but once again just lots of starts without going on. I think they'll probably stick with him."  "You've got to put some question marks over the others."

04:27(IST)

“The fact that he played a straight one and nicked a straight one is a bit of a concern.” Ponting mentioned that while there is a “question mark” over Marsh’s spot in the Test team, the likes of Marcus Harris, Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne were nailed on to be part of the team for the Ashes in August, in his opinion.

04:24(IST)

“He’s averaging 34 in Test cricket and at his best he's very good,” Ponting told cricket.com.au. “We saw again today he started nice and positively and hit two really good cover drives and then it's just the ball that doesn't do anything that gets him out. “You'd even sit back and question why he thought he had to play at that delivery. It was a fair way outside off stump and wasn't like it was going to spin back square and challenge his off stump, so why (did he) need to play at it.

04:23(IST)

Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has said that he is worried for Shaun Marsh’s form, the manner of his dismissal in Sydney on Saturday morning against India leaving him concerned. Marsh has only averaged 18 runs across 19 tests since scoring a century against England about a year ago, and was dismissed for eight after he edged an unassuming delivery from Ravindra Jadeja to Ajinkya Rahane at first slip.

After close to 16 overs being washed out due to rain on day 3, India would look to wrap the Australian tail early. Hello and welcome the live blog on day 4.

Day 3 round-up: Australia squandered a strong start as the top order suffered yet another batting collapse in Sydney on Saturday, leaving themselves with an improbable task of overhauling India's huge first innings total.

The hosts were 236/6 on Day 3 of the final Test when play was stopped due to light drizzles and poor light. The drizzle soon turned into a downpour, meaning play was abandoned.

Peter Handscomb (28*) and Pat Cummins (25*) will now have to put on a big partnership if the hosts are to even have any hopes of avoiding the follow-on.

The two have managed to put together a 38-run partnership after Kuldeep Yadav (3/71) dismissed Tim Paine early in the final session but will know that there remains plenty of work to be done on Day 4. Yet it could have been a different story had any of the top-order batsman – all of whom got starts – managed to stick around long enough to make a big score.

Opener Marcus Harris hit a career-best 79, he didn’t get much support from senior batsmen Usman Khawaja and Shaun Marsh, who failed to deliver when needed most.

Both were guilty of throwing away their wicket, with Marsh being caught by Ajinkya Rahane off Ravindra Jadeja (2/62) at first slip and Khawaja holing out to Cheteshwar Pujara while trying to attack Kuldeep.

Khawaja had been dropped by Pant behind the stumps but he did not do enough to make the young wicketkeeper pay for his mistake. His opening partner Harris, who has looked good on occasions in his still-young Test career, settled in relatively quickly and played some good shots around the ground.

He survived a close call on 24 when a drive to a diving KL Rahul fell just short. Harris then reached his second Test 50 with a single before smacking three fours in one Kuldeep over.

Harris was on 77 at lunch but could only add two more runs to his score before chopping a delivery from Jadeja onto his stumps, thus ensuring the wait for an Australian batsman to score a century in this series continues.

It is perhaps telling that Harris' score 79 is the highest any one of the home batsman has scored whereas the visitors have scored five centuries so far in the series.

The Marnus Labuschagne gamble didn’t quite work out with the ball but he made a promising start with the bat when he came in to bat at number three, scoring 38.

However, he was sent packing by an absolute blinder of a catch from Rahane at mid-wicket off Mohammad Shami's bowling.

Things didn’t improve much thereafter as Marsh also fell cheaply before Travis Head was caught and bowled by Kuldeep just before tea for 20, leaving them at 198/5 at tea.

Matters were only made worse when they lost Paine in the first over of the final session as he failed to read a peach of a delivery from Kuldeep and was clean bowled. But the pair of Cummins and Handscomb managed to navigate the rest of the day before bad light and then showers brought the day to a premature end.

India lead the series 2-1 after victories in Adelaide and Melbourne and are fast closing in on a historic first-ever series win Down Under.
