CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation on Saturday handed over Rs 1.60 crore -- the lion’s share of Rs 2.21 crore it earned through e-auctioning of abandoned vehicles -- to the Chennai city police to set up CCTV cameras on the footpaths and roadsides.
The corporation had seized vehicles that were parked in no parking zones, pavements and were lying abandoned on the road sides. A total of 7,682 two-wheelers, 103 four-wheelers and 90 three-wheelers were seized in March.
The civic body uploaded a list of the vehicles on its website in August last year and asked residents to claim them. In September, auctions began.
Rs 2.21 crore was earned through an e-auction, carried out by Metal Scrap Trading Corporation (MSTC). The corporation paid Rs 8 lakh to MSTC for its services, and 75% of the amount was given to the city police.
The corporation will soon begin auction of 1,241 vehicles it seized recently.
