What started off as a surprise check to look into the usage of banned plastic carry bags left Vellore Corporation Commissioner S. Siva Subramanian surprised.
At 6.45 a.m. on Saturday, the Commissioner walked along with a conservancy worker in Kalinjur of Katpadi zone. “The sanitary worker was taking the pushcart for door-to-door collection and I went along, expecting residents to hand over plastic carry bags. But not one of the 30 households on the Kalinjur Main Road had plastic bags,” he said. The residents handed over only wet waste to the worker, he said. “They did not know me. When I inquired if they had plastic carry bags, they said they had stopped taking plastic bags from shops since the ban came into effect. I am happy that the message has reached the people,” he said.
