Indefinite economic blockade from Janaury 8 to protest against bill
TNN | Updated: Jan 7, 2019, 09:38 ISTGUWAHATI: The coordination forum of 70 organizations led by Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) on Sunday announced an indefinite economic blockade from January 8 in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
North East Students’ Organization (Neso), All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) and 30 other indigenous organizations from the state have already called a total shutdown for 11 hours on January 8 in protest against the proposed legislation. Their call for shutdown was issued on Saturday after Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently said in Silchar that the bill will be passed in Parliament soon.
Despite its differences, the coordination forum, which is led by KMSS and AJYCP and comprises indigenous and minority community organizations, has extended support to the total shutdown call issued by Neso, Aasu and and 30 other indigenous organizations.
Talking to the media, KMSS adviser Akhil Gogoi said, “Outsourcing of crude oil and natural gas, coal, limestone and all kinds of forest produces from Assam will be blocked during the economic blockade which begins from January 8. Work in government establishments will come to a standstill. Outsourcing and transportation of valuable resources from the state will also be prevented at any cost. This is going to be an unprecedented stir to mark our protest against the citizenship bill that is aimed at reducing the indigenous communities of the region to a minority in order to further BJP’s Hindu vote-bank politics.”
Meanwhile, a large number of women activists from the 70 organizations and other groups staged a protest against the bill outside the state BJP headquarters at Hengerabari in the city on Sunday. Security personnel scuffled with the agitating crowd of protesters during the day.
The coordination forum led by KMSS and AJYCP also said it would observe January 7 (Monday) as a ‘hatred day’ by hoisting black flags and staging protests against the bill. The joint parliamentary committee (JPC) on citizenship bill will table its report in the Lok Sabha on Monday. Neso, Aasu and its allied organizations from Assam have already said that they would observe January 7 as a ‘black day’.
In Guwahati, Aasu activists have already launched a poster campaign to make the bandh across the northeast successful on January 8.
