JAIPUR: Uproar and outrage ensued after a 42-year-old police driver died in Kanwatia Hospital after meeting with a road accident on Saturday, following which police force from multiple police stations was deployed to pacify the angry relatives of the deceased, who alleged that he died of the hospital’s negligence.
According to Shastri Nagar police, Rameshwar Lal Barala, a driver attached to Jaipur prison directorate, was on his way to his morning shift, when near Kanwatia Circle, a speeding tractor ran over him.
“The accident occurred at 7am. Barala was severely injured and bleeding profusely. He was rushed to Kanwatia Hospital where he later died,” said SHO Chena Ram Bera.
Barala’s relatives alleged that there were no duty doctors to attend to the patient and nurses were missing too. A police constable told TOI that Barala’s angry kin alleged that he could have been saved given proper treatment was made available to him. “After Barala died, a large number of his relatives and friends descended at the hospital. There was no violence, but we agreed to register the case to pacify the protesters,” added Bera.
BJP MLA from Amber, Satish Poonia also visited the hospital to console the family members and also spoke to the doctors there.
A three-member committee has been formed by the SMS medical college principal and controller Dr Sudhir Bhandari, said Dr L Harshvardhan, medical superintendent of Kanwatia Hospital. The sources said that the committee will look into the mater and submit its report in three days.
Shastri Nagar police have registered two FIRs in the case based on complaint filed by the relatives. “We have registered a case against the tractor driver for causing death by negligence under Section 304 of the IPC,” Bera told TOI, adding that a case was also registered against the hospital administration by the relatives.
The initial investigation indicates that the tractor was coming from the wrong side and rammed into Barala. The speeding tractor dragged an injured Barala for a few metres before eventually coming to a halt. While the driver fled from the spot, the passers-by took him to the hospital.
