HYDERABAD: A 40-year-old teacher was booked on Saturday for allegedly touching a 16-year-old girl student at a school in Mangalhat. Though the incident took place on Thursday, the case, under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), was registered on Saturday.

Mangalhat police said the incident took place after teachers had organised an event, where a cake was cut, at the school. Later, the teacher went to a class, where the girl was seated. “The teacher claimed that when he was asking the student to sit at some other place, his hand accidentally touched her. The teacher apologised to the student after he came to know that she was upset about the incident,’’ Mangalhat inspector G Ranaveer Reddy told STOI.

Meanwhile, rumours started spreading in the locality that a student was sexually assaulted. Police came to know about it. They contacted the school staff and, based on the statement given by the victim, facts were ascertained. They came to a conclusion that it was not a case of sexual assault, but a case was registered under Section 354D (stalking) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and POSCO. The teacher has been working at the school for the last seven years and knew the girl for as many years.
