TIRUPUR: A trial court here has sentenced two Shiv Sena members to three years imprisonment for damaging a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus on November 18, 2012 -- a day after party founder Bal Thackeray died.
Sena members Mahesh Kumar, 37, and Mahendran, 29, of Sukumar Nagar in Poolavadi near Udumalpet pelted a TNSCT bus -- plying between Vedaranyam and Tirupur -- with stones when they went on a rampage after the death of Thackeray. The windshield of the bus was damaged.
Based on a complaint filed by bus driver Karthikeyan, the Tirupur south police arrested the duo.
The case was tried in the Tirupur additional sessions court II. As the prosecution proved the case, judge A Mohmed Jiyaputheen on Saturday sentenced Mahesh and Mahendran to three years imprisonment under sections of the Tamil Nadu Property Prevention of Damage and Loss Act and three more months imprisonment under Section 294 (b) (punishment for obscene acts or words in public) of the IPC. The judge imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on each of them.
Mahendran was given another three years imprisonment under Section 506 (2) of the IPC for intimidating the bus driver. The imprisonment will run concurrently.
