To be included in MGNREGS

The flood-hit village roads in the district will be restored after including it in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), K.C. Venugopal, MP, has said.

Mr. Venugopal said that he had directed officials concerned to prepare a detailed project report for carrying out the refurbishment of the damaged roads. The restoration work will be completed by March 31. A team led by Collector S. Suhas will be set up to monitor the road work, he said. A large number of roads in Kuttanad and Chengannur were damaged in floods. Although major roads including the Alappuzha-Changanassery (AC) road was restored recently, several other roads in the region remain in a dilapidated condition.

Mr. Venugopal suggested that asset creation should be given priority in the MGNREGS. The workers under MGNREGS will revive and renovate water sources damaged in floods in the district, he said.

He further said that the Centre was not permitting the utilisation of funds under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) for MGNREGS works in the State. “In several North Indian States, MPLADS is linked with MGNREGS. This will ensure better implementation of projects,” he said.
