Tirupur: A trial court here has sentenced two Shiv Sena cadres to three years imprisonment for damaging a state-run bus following the demise of the party founder Bal Thackeray in November 17, 2012.

The convicts were identified as Mahesh Kumar, 37, and Mahendran, 29, of Sukumar Nagar at Poolavadi near Udumalpet. According to a court source, the two were arrested on November 18, 2012, for damaging a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus in the city.

“The duo pelted stones at a bus plying between Vedaranyam and Tirupur, breaking its windshield and abused the bus driver Karthikeyan, who lodged a complaint with the Tirupur south police. The two were subsequently booked for damaging public property and using abusive language against the bus driver,” the source said.

The case was tried before the Tirupur additional sessions court II. As the prosecution proved the case, Judge A Mohmed Jiyaputheen on Saturday sentenced Mahesh and Mahendran to three years imprisonment under the Tamil Nadu Property Prevention of Damage and Loss Act, and another three months jail under Section 294 (b) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). For intimidating the bus driver, Mahendran was given additional three years imprisonment under Section 506 (2) of the IPC. However, the terms would run concurrently. The judge also imposed on them a fine of Rs 5,000 each.
