PATNA: Patnaites will have to pay a meagre amount from this month to avail the door-to-door garbage collection service of the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC).

“The monthly payment system will be effective from January 1 onwards and supervisors concerned will maintain a register while collecting money from both residential and commercial buildings at the end of every month,” PMC deputy commissioner Vishal Anand said on Saturday.

While individual households will be charged Rs 30 per month, shops and small eateries will pay Rs 100. Restaurants, guest houses, dharamshalas, hostels, commercial offices, government offices, banks and educational institutes will be charged Rs 500. Medical institutions, clinics, dispensaries and laboratories will have to pay Rs 250 whereas hospitals with 50 beds will be charged Rs 1,500. This service is, however, free for those belonging to below poverty line.

All 75 wards have been divided into five sectors and each sector has one supervisor, an auto tipper with a driver and a helper.

Admitting that the PMC had to improve the trash collection service in Pataliputra and New Capital Circle, Anand said, “Many houses are yet to be covered, but private agencies carrying out garbage collection work will be fined as per norms of the civic body.”

A two-month free door-to-door garbage collection service was launched by chief minister Nitish Kumar on October 2 last year. The PMC, in its empowered standing committee meeting on December 8 decided to charge money for the service from January onwards.

All together 350 auto tippers, 10 sweeping machines, 100 large and 106 small dustbins are used to carry out door-to-door garbage collection work.

Earlier, the garbage collection scheme was launched by the then urban development and housing department minister Maheshwar Hazari and former Patna mayor Afzal Imam in April, 2017. The PMC had outsourced the work to two private agencies and charged Rs 60 per month from each household, double of what is being charged now.
